"We are such stuff as dreams are made on, and our little life is rounded with a sleep."
One might think one is in a dream when crossing the Shakespeare Bridge in Los Feliz. Decorated in a gothic style, this shortcut across a residential valley in Franklin Hills stands out among it's modern surroundings.
The Shakespeare Bridge was designed by J.C Wright, cost $59,690 dollars, and was completed in 1926. In 1974, the bridge was deemed a Los Angeles Historical Cultural Monument. Unfortunately, when the Northridge Earthquake of 1994 hit, the bridge suffered severe damage along with other landmarks across the city. The Franklin Hills Resident Association spent $1.5 million dollars to restore the bridge and even added electrical outlets so the bridge could take part in decorative festivities around the holidays. The 30-foot-wide, 206-foot-long bridge remains a hidden gem and local favorite in Franklin Hills.
