The Big Wheel Bike, an iconic reminder of childhood, playing outside and a few scrapped knees. Introduced in 1969 by Louis Marx and Company, this new take on the tricycle was designed for safety for its rider with a low-ride and made mostly of plastic.
In 2000, a multimedia artist named Jon Brumit happened across a big wheel and introduced that big wheel to the second curviest street in San Francisco: Lombard Street. Lombard street is world-famous for its hairpin turns and crooked appearance. So, why not test it out with a big wheel?
Brumit passed out flyers in the neighborhood asking people to join him on Easter Sunday with a big wheel to ride down the street with him.
No one else participated but a handful of spectators showed up to cheer him on. Thus, the Big Wheel Race was born. Eventually the extra commotion every Easter began to annoy the residents of Lombard Street, so the race was moved to Vermont Street in Potrero Hill (THE #1 curviest street in San Francisco). Since 2008 the B.Y.O.B.W. Race has been held every Easter Sunday on the normally sleepy Potrero Hill.
We decided to participate in this unique event and registered online (mandatory), gathered some cash for donation (not required, but helps to keep the race going each year) and found two big wheel bikes.
