In this day and age movies earn views on a movie screen, TV set at home or even a phone. But hidden in an alley way in the boisterous streets of San Francisco is a way to view the art of filmmaking unlike anywhere else in this world. The PeepHole Cinema.
The creative genius behind the PeepHole Cinema is visual artist, teacher and culture maker: Laurie O Brien. Peephole cinema opened it's scope in the alleyway for official viewing in 2013. The cinema is easy to miss if you don't know where to look. As O Brien Said: "I liked this idea of a treasure hunt of art". The peephole cinema runs twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week and is overseen and cared for by curator, Sarah Klein. Another brilliant display of creativity of O Brien and Klein is that the cinema plays silent short films and they change every so often. So if you're a first time viewer or a frequent visitor there is a different experience for everyone. With a posted list of films next to the peephole cinema, one is able to view the title and filmmaker's name.
If you happen to live in Brooklyn, you can enjoy a Peephole Cinema in your neighborhood at 97 Wilson Ave. If you happen live in Los Angeles, you can enjoy a peephole cinema at 504 Chung King Court. Peephole Cinema is spreading the art of filmmaking in a big way... from a tiny scope. The Peephole Cinema that we enjoyed is opened for viewing at 280 Orange Alley in San Francisco. Look for a small sign with an eyeball dangling from a red wall. Then sit back, watch the show and enjoy this hidden gem.
