Once upon a time, Cheri & Gonzalo met, fell in love, and lived happily ever after. Rather than confine themselves to a life of simplicity, however, the two artists have formulated the recipe for a steadfast marriage, as well as a perdurable work of art. Toting a background in printmaking and performance arts, Cheri Pann has featured more than 20 solo exhibits in California and Japan. Specializing in creating functional items out of tile and stoneware clay, Cheri has placed a creative anchor in Venice, California. Dubbed the Marc Chagall of the North and Central Americas, Gonzolo Duran has been revered for his unbound imagination and knack for carpentry.
In 1994, Cheri purchased a modest home in Venice. The main appeal of the home was not its appearance - the artists actually detested its plainness - but the fact that there was room in the back to build a studio. Cheri & Gonzalo put their passion and expertise to work, and Gonzolo built the studio, cabinets, their bed, and much more. However, the work wasn’t done...nor has it stopped. One day, after a handmade tile fell and broke into pieces, Cheri opted to utilize the fragments instead of tossing them out. Since then, Cheri creates the tile and Gonzalo breaks them. Over two decades later, the plain 1940’s house has been transformed into a visual feast. Created from splintered glass, tile, and trinkets from around the globe, the Mosaic Tile House resembles a coral reef. Considered a work in progress, the Mosaic Tile House is riddled with spellbinding colors, paintings, sculptures, and more. Everywhere one looks, there is something different for one to see.
The Mosaic Tile House is opened for tours on Saturdays from 1-4 pm and reservations are recommended. The cost of admission for this unique experience is $20 for adults, $15 for Seniors 65+ and free for children 12 & under.
