Deep in the hills of Griffith Park sits a broken down picnic table beneath a fallen tree. One urban legend speaks of a young couple killed here. As the story goes, on October 31st, 1976, a 22-year-old musician named Rand Garrett and a 20-year-old actress named Nancy Jeanson made their way to a picnic table on an evening stroll. During moments of passion on the table, a loud crack came from the tree above which then toppled upon the lovers, crushing them beneath it. Legend has it that part of their bodies were cremated and spread over the table so they could be together forever.
Following the alleged events of Halloween night, many visitors have claimed to have seen or heard unusual things while visiting the table. At 11:00 AM on November 7th, the city approved the tree's removal. Morris Carl was hired for the job, but he didn’t get far. He sawed off the crown of the tree and then was so overcome with chills, he had to step away. That’s when Carl reported, the tree started shaking violently. Carl ran to his car and quickly unlocked the doors. But when he sat down inside he heard someone whisper “Leave us alone” in his ear. The windows fogged up with the words “Next time you die!” etched into the glass.
Soon after Carl was run off the property from fear, his boss, Dennis Higgs became more frustrated that the tree remained fallen across the table. Higgs threw his chain saw in his truck, headed out to the site, and that was the last time anyone saw him alive. Just after sunrise a jogger heading along Mt. Hollywood Drive spotted the body of Dennis Higgs laying next to the tree. The police suspected foul play when they discovered his broken chain saw. The coroner deemed the cause of death as a heart attack. Others suspected that Higgs met his fate at the hands of the ghosts who gave warning to leave them alone once and for all.
To this day, the tree still has not been removed from the middle of the table, and stories continue to be spun surrounding how such a strange sight came to be.
