THE SALTON SEA NAVAL BASE

Location: Imperial County, CA
Accessibility: Difficult

Created: 1942
The Salton Sea Naval Base was a naval air station located in Imperial County, California. The base was established in 1942 as part of the United States' effort to support World War II.

The Salton Sea Naval Base was built on the shore of the Salton Sea, a large saltwater lake located in the Imperial Valley. The base was used as a training facility for naval aviators, providing them with an opportunity to practice carrier landings and takeoffs. The base also played a role in research and development, particularly in the area of jet propulsion.
The base was initially home to a single runway, but it was expanded over time to include additional runways and facilities. At its peak, the base covered over 2,000 acres and included a hospital, fire station, and other support facilities. The base was also home to thousands of personnel, including sailors, Marines, and civilians.

After the end of World War II, the Salton Sea Naval Base continued to be used as a training facility for naval aviators. The base was also used to support military operations in Korea and Vietnam.

In the 1970s, the base began to experience a decline in activity as the military began to shift its focus away from naval aviation. The base was eventually decommissioned in 1978 and turned over to the state of California.

Today, the site of the former Salton Sea Naval Base is largely abandoned. Many of the buildings and facilities have been demolished or have fallen into disrepair. However, there are still some reminders of the base's history, including the runways and some of the old support buildings.

The Salton Sea Naval Base played an important role in the history of the United States military. The base was home to thousands of personnel and served as a training ground for naval aviators for over 30 years. While the base is no longer in use, it remains an important part of California's history and a reminder of the sacrifices and contributions made by the men and women who served there.
