This simple set of stairs nestled in a charming neighborhood in Silverlake, is an iconic set piece from classic Hollywood. The revered comedy duo, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, made movie history using this flight of steps in the comedy short film “The Music Box”.
“The Music Box” involves Laurel and Hardy trying to push a piano up the stairs with many obstacles along the way. The film was released in 1932 and won the first Academy Award for Live Action short film. It was selected for preservation by the Library of Congress in 1997. Luckily for Classic Hollywood fans, the steps are a public staircase which connects Vendome Street with Descanso drive and are easily accessible to explore. The stairs were also used in a missing 1927 Laurel and Hardy filmed called “Hats Off”. It is believed the film will one day be found. Those who desire can read the commemorative Laurel and Hardy plaque, walk up all 132 steps, and soak in some classic Hollywood history.
