If one has been in Los Angeles for a substantial amount of time, one may have noticed painted Angel Wings at various locations in the City of Angels. Conceived by artist Collette Miller, the Global Angel Wings project began in 2012. Miller once stated, “I created the interactive street art angel wings project to remind humanity that we are the Angels on Earth.” Originally from Richmond, Virginia, Miller moved to Los Angeles in 1999 and painted her first pair of Angel Wings in the Downtown Arts District at night while her friends stood by on lookout duty and concealed her with a truck.
Sprinkled across Los Angeles, the Angel Wings are interactive and beckon for passersby to snap a photograph with the life-sized murals. Angel Wings can be found in neighborhoods all across the city, including the Downtown Arts District, Angel City Brewery, Regent Theater, SkySpace LA, and much more. Miller opted to begin the unique project in Los Angeles since, “LA is the City of Angels, often known for its street art and murals. It is fitting the interactive street art angel wings project started here.” Not limited to Los Angeles, Colette has taken her project to a global level and has left the universal symbol of divinity in Mexico, Kenya, Australia, Cuba, and several other countries. While numerous pairs of Angel Wings no longer exist due to the wear of time, the tearing down of buildings, or being painted over, the project is ongoing and it remains to be seen where a pair of wings will pop up next. Each set of Angel Wings is unique and appears to match the tone of its surroundings. Join us as we roam the streets of Los Angeles, eager to find the Angel Wings of the Global Angel Wings Project. |
