Located on Avenue G in Lancaster California is a desert road that plays a unique tune when driven across, and it's one of only a handful in the world. The concept for a "singing" road began in Denmark when two brothers designed the "Asphaltophone". Since then, musical roads were born in New Mexico, Japan and South Korea, and elsewhere.
Lancaster's Musical Road (also known as the Civic Musical Road) was originally constructed on Avenue K to be featured in a Honda Civic commercial. A group of talented musicians and engineers were hired to construct the grooves in the asphalt to create the finale from the William Tell Overture when driven over at a certain speed. But due to a miscalculation in the distance between the paved groves, most of the song is out of tune at any speed.
Due to noise complaints from the residents, the musical road was paved over and rebuilt in a more deserted location on Avenue G. For those who want to hear the harmony, optimal speed for sound quality is 55 MPH as you drive west in the far left lane. So pile into your car and let the Musical Road sing for you!
