This bookstore is the largest used and new book and record store in California and has a layout like no other. That’s because The Last Bookstore resides in a century-old bank building. The building was once the headquarters for Crocker Citizens National Bank, and was designed by Parkinson and Bergstrom.
In the 1920’s, Spring Street was known as “The Wall Street of the West.” But by the 1960’s, most of the banks and other financial structures moved to the other side of Downtown leaving most of the building abandoned. Then, one day, Josh Spencer had a genius idea. He decided to turn that abandoned bank building into a home for something he loved….books. In 2005, The Last Bookstore opened its doors, and since then, its halls have remained flowing with eager readers and lovers of the unusual. Today, The Last Bookstore is known for its labyrinth, color-coded section, mysterious vaults, artwork, records, spiral-staircases and an experience you’ll never forget. So, as The Last Bookstore states: What are you waiting for? We won’t be here forever.
