Just up a fire road from Bronson Canyon Park is a cave that might be familiar to fans of the Batman series. But this cave was not always home to Gotham’s dark knight. This cave and surrounding area are the remains of an old quarry.
In 1903, the Union Rock Company created a quarry in the Hollywood hills in order to extract crushed rock to build the city streets of Hollywood, just south of the quarry. With the help of 16 employees, around 1,000 tons of fine-grained crystalline and rock were extracted. By 1920, the Union Rock Company closed the quarry, leaving behind the unusual set of caves. Allegedly, the project was brought to a halt because the rocks were worth more staying right where they were.
Now the quarry, the cave, and Bronson Canyon Park are all part of the 4,310-acre Griffith Park. For more information on how to find Bronson Cave, please watch the video. |
